A divine oracle is addressed to her when she is pregnant; God proclaims that “two nations” are in her womb and will contend with each other (Genesis 25:20-23). This oracle foreshadows the tensions that will characterize the relationship between her sons, Jacob and Esau. Isaac blesses Jacob rather than Esau, the first to emerge from the womb and thus the expected recipient of the paternal blessing (Genesis 27). The designation of Jacob as heir to the ancestral lineage, which means he will be progenitor of all Israel, is orchestrated by Rebekah. She covers Jacob with animal skins so that when the vision-impaired Isaac touches Jacob, he thinks he is touching Esau, who is hairy. Isaac then gives his blessing to Jacob rather than first-born Esau. Through clever manipulation, whereby Isaac is deceived, she achieves her purpose and controls the family destiny.
RECHAB (REKAB)

ROME

During that time Israel was under the thumb of Greek rulers, gained independence for a brief period of time, and then came under the control of the Roman Empire. When the Jewish leaders finally determined to put Jesus to death, they had to enlist the help of the Roman authorities (Matthew 27:11). The meaning of Ruth is "Friend" Ruth is a Moabite woman who marries a Judean immigrant named Mahlon (Ruth 1:1-5) (Ruth 4:10). Upon his death she becomes a childless widow who chooses to accompany her mother-in-law, Naomi, to Judah. Naomi protests the decision (Ruth 1:11-13), but Ruth perseveres. She pledges total loyalty, even unto death, to Naomi, her people, and her god YHWH (Ruth 1:16–17). When the women of Bethlehem greet them both, Naomi fails to acknowledge that Ruth is with her. Instead, the storyteller reports her presence as Moabite immigrant (a foreigner) and daughter-in-law (Ruth 1:19–22).
